A remarkable moment in Manitoba’s history unfolded when Matthew Tannas, a firefighter and paramedic from Hamiota, claimed one of the top five largest lottery prizes ever awarded in the province. On December 3, Tannas won an astonishing $40 million in the Lotto Max draw, sharing the $80 million jackpot with another winner from Quebec.

Fourth-Highest Lottery Win in Manitoba
Tannas’ $40 million prize is the fourth-largest lottery win in Manitoba’s history. His incredible stroke of luck began when he purchased the winning ticket through the Lotto Spot app while working as a big game guide in Alberta. He was inspired to buy the ticket after seeing a post promoting the $80 million jackpot. The winning numbers for the draw were 9, 14, 21, 26, 29, 32, and 41.
Realizing the Life-Changing Win
It wasn’t until Tannas was driving home that he realized he had won. He passed a gas station and decided to check his app, which confirmed the monumental win. “I didn’t believe it at the time, so I drove to my brother’s house and had him confirm with me that I wasn’t making stuff up,” he recalled. Despite the life-changing news, Tannas described himself as remaining calm.
Later, he visited his wife at her workplace to share the news. Initially, she thought the prize was $40,000 until she counted the zeros. “There might have been a little bit of tears and some hugging and stuff like that,” Tannas said with a smile.

Plans for the Winnings
With his newfound fortune, Tannas plans to prioritize family and community. He revealed his intention to help pay for his children’s education and purchase reliable vehicles for them. “We’re going to be looking for some reliable vehicles for our kids just to make sure that they’re safe,” he explained.
Additionally, Tannas plans to buy a new truck for himself and travel to Nova Scotia to visit his sister. He joked about how his win might attract more people to his hometown of Hamiota, a small community located 280 kilometers west of Winnipeg.
